5th Malta International Film Festival – Malta

‘The apple of my eye’ triumphs at the 5th Malta Short Film Festival The film ‘The apple of my eye’ is the winner of the top honour Best Picture at the fifth Malta Short Film Festival. Directed by Josecho de Linares, from Spain, the film depicts the emotional journey of two siblings who are experiencing their grandmother slowly perishing away.


Speaking at the award ceremony, de Linares said that the film was a personal tribute to his own grandmother and hoped that his win inspires other new filmmakers to follow their dream and express themselves through film. The film also won the Foreign Jury Award and Best Foreign Director. Top contenders this year included The Elected from Malta directed by Patrick Vella who won the Most Original concept award, Online Poll award and Best Local Director; Prologue, directed by Lucas Figueroa from Spain, which won Best European film and Best Script and The Last Night of Baby Gun directed by Jan Eilhardt from Germany that won the awards for Cinematography and Production Design. The award ceremony was held at the Radisson Blu Resort Hotel, St Julians and was organised by Joyce Grech and Tony Parnis for the Malta Film Foundation. The festival is the only festival worldwide that is broadcast entirely on television and therefore reaches a wide and varied audience in Malta and is also streamed online for an international audience. This year’s local jury panel was made up of Prof Rev Saviour Chircop, Dean of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences at the University of Malta, leading production manager Winston Azzopardi, cultural manager and commentator Tony Cassar Darien and cultural journalist and festival organiser Joyce Grech. The foreign jury panel consisted of UK production manager and director Terry Bamber, German director Robert Sigl and Iranian scriptwriter and director Mansour Foruzesh. The main supporters of the festival are TVM, Malta Arts Fund, Studio Seven and Radisson Blu Resort.
